Bloodborne Pathogens (Version 1.0, revised Aug 2018)

Bloodborne Pathogens are microorganisms that are transmitted through the bloodstream. For these to be spread, the bodily fluids of an infected person must enter into the bloodstream of another person. The most common cause of transmission in the workplace is when an infected person’s blood enters another person’s bloodstream via an open wound.

ITW Envopak has begun the practise of ‘universal precautions’, meaning that all human blood and bodily fluids are treated as though they are known to be infected by bloodborne pathogens. Blood and bodily fluids are not worked with in an occupational manner, so anyone that would be exposed to them would be as a result of an accident.

First Aiders are trained on what to do in these circumstances. You should refer any issues to your First Aider and should, under no circumstances, put yourself into contact with blood and bodily fluids. If this happens accidentally, you should notify your first aider immediately.

It is important to note that any surfaces that are contaminated will be cleaned and decontaminated after contact or suspected contact as soon as feasible. Decontamination shall be done with an approved disinfectant which is appropriate for the surface or item, by a trained First Aider wearing gloves and other appropriate PPE.
